What To Do If You Find An Injured Animal:

- First of all, be prepared by
carrying the following items in your car trunk at all times: a large towel
or blanket; cardboard box (with a top and air holes); heavy gloves; and a
long leash that can be used as a loop collar. In your wallet, carry
veterinary emergency numbers, animal shelter numbers and the names of
licensed wildlife experts in your area.
- Gently place the box over the
bird or small animal, or if the animal can't be moved, place a towel or
blanket over him until help arrives. Remember to try to handle the animal as
little as possible and don't try to give it food or water. If the animal is
a bird, make sure it is sitting upright to aid normal respiration. You can
do this by making a donut out of a tissue & sitting the bird inside it.
- An injured dog, like any
animal, may bite out of fear or pain. So unless a dog is choking or
vomiting, you should wrap a piece of bandaging, cloth or belt around his
snout several times and tie the ends behind the head before lifting the
animal. (Make sure the dog can breathe; heaving sides are a sign of
breathing difficulty). Remove the muzzle as soon as possible.
- Shock often accompanies any
trauma, so keep an injured animal as warm as possible while waiting for
help.
